The Tobacco Dependence Program (TDP) is dedicated to reducing the harm to health caused by tobacco use. The TDP particularly aims to provide expertise on quitting smoking for those who need it most.
We do this through education, treatment, research and advocacy.

Jonathan Foulds’ Presentation at the 92nd Tobacco Merchants Association (TMA)
Annual Meeting, Williamsburg VA, May 7-8, 2007

The meeting was attended by around 200 people, around 90% of whom work directly for tobacco companies. They represent most of the main tobacco companies and sectors from around the world (from Altadis to Universal Leaf Tobacco Co). I was invited to speak on ‘The Future of Tobacco Harm Reduction” and was persuaded by a colleague that this is the appropriate forum to try to get across a message to the tobacco industry (and perhaps to learn a bit about that industry). (FYI I didn’t accept an honorarium from TMA or travel/hotel expenses to attend).

TMA describes itself on its website as follows:

“The Tobacco Merchants Association (TMA) was founded in 1915 to manage information of vital interest to the worldwide tobacco industry. TMA is supported by virtually all companies in the following sectors: cigarette, cigar, pipe and chewing tobacco, snuff, and leaf tobacco, as well as industry suppliers, securities analysts, advertising agencies, management consultants, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, importers & exporters, and others who value rapid delivery of critical information.”
