increases the risk for stillbirth and miscarriage.

About 11% of all spontaneous abortions are attributable to smoking. Among women

who smoke a pack a day or more, smoking causes 40% of all spontaneous abortions.

Maternal smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death by

25 to 35%. This represents an annual loss of almost 5000 fetuses and newborn

infants in England.

In a study from Australia, three or more miscarriages were reported by 7.4% of current

smokers, 5.3% of former smokers, and 3.7% of never smokers in a survey of 14,000

women ages 45 to 49. Among the same number of women ages 18 to 22, one or two

miscarriages were reported by 6.2% of current smokers, 4.7% of former smokers,

and only 1.4% of never smokers.

In 1980, about a quarter of women smoked regularly during pregnancies. This means

that of the 3.6 million women who delivered in 1980, approximately 900,000 women

smoked during pregnancy. Because maternal smoking during pregnancy increases

the number of "spontaneous" abortions by approximately five abortions per hundred

pregnancies, such smoking by nearly one million women in the United States may

have caused approximately 50,000 abortions in 1980.
