The average age of initiation for "spit" or smokeless tobacco is age 9; 67% of a

sample began at age 12 or younger, and 28% were 5 years old or younger when they

first tried it. The highest spit tobacco use rates are in Native Americans, where female

use rates sometimes equal males.
