| The median adult smoking rate in the United States was 23.2% in 1997. The highest |
| prevalence rates were Kentucky, 30.8%, Missouri, 28.7%, Arkansas, 28.5%, Nevada, |
| 27.7%, and West Virginia, 27.4%. The lowest rates were in Utah, 13.7%, California, |
| 18.4%, Hawaii, 18.6%, the District of Columbia, 18.8%, and Idaho, 19.9%. The |
| highest smoking prevalence for men was Kentucky (33.1%), and for women highest in |
| Nevada (29.8%). The prevalence of adult smokeless tobacco use ranged from 1.4% |
| in Arizona, the lowest, up to 8.8% in West Virginia. |

| In 1997, Kentucky had the highest smoking rate in the nation, 30.8%, up from 27.8% in |
| 1995. 47% of Kentucky high school students were current smokers, and two thirds of |
| farms in Kentucky grow tobacco. |

| and 42% for women) and lowest in the southwest (25.4% for men and 17.8% for |
| women) in surveys from 1993 through 1996. In Alaska, 41.8% of Alaska Native and |
