Between 80 and 95% of alcoholics also smoke cigarettes, a rate three times higher

than the general population. And about 70% of alcoholics are heavy smokers, more

than a pack a day, compared with only 10% of the general population.

Recovering alcoholics often receive less than optimal tobacco cessation counseling

out of fear that attempts to stop smoking might jeopardize their sobriety. However,

recent research does not support this idea, and instead suggests that smoking
