| Smoking prevalence in Japanese men dropped from 82% in 1965 to 59% in 1995, |
| while the female prevalence remained at 15%. Female smoking prevalence is |
| declining for women over age 40, but is increasing steadily for young women. Total |
| cigarette consumption was 322 billion in 1995, or 3200 per capita; 21% of sales were |
| imported cigarettes, up from 2% in 1985. |
