Deep in the rural countryside of Laos, large Marlboro cowboy posters dominate
village stores. Rural people use cigarette smoke to repel mosquitoes (this in a country
where malaria is the leading cause of death).

Vietnam has the highest reported male smoking prevalence in the world, 72.8%,
compared to 4.3% among women. In the age group 35 to 44 years, 84% of men were
smokers. Domestic brands cost 14 cents to 55 cents a pack, and more-expensive
imported brands account for only 16% of the market. On average, smokers spent $49
on cigarettes each year, an amount 1.5 times their annual per capita expense for
education ($30.82), 5 times their annual per capita household expense for health care
($9.65), and about a third of their annual per capita household expense for food
($143). A new domestic brand, Boy Boy Boy, "features packaging with images of a
Vietnamese Marlboro Man, complete with cowboy hat," and the transnational tobacco
companies promote their products aggressively.

Vietnamese tobacco companies are after the local teenage market with cigarettes
called Titanic, Rave, and Boy Boy Boy. The Titanic brand shows on the pack
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in a scene from the film Titanic. The picture is
almost certainly being used without their permission, since Vietnam leads the world in
illegally copying designer goods.
