| Carl Seltzer, a retired professor of public health from Harvard, received a total of |
| $750,000 in grants from the industry-funded Council for Tobacco Research. His work |
| focused on countering the evidence that smoking causes heart disease. Newspaper |
| clippings on his work included titles "Doctor Slams Link between Smoking and Heart |
| Disease" and "Smoking does Not Cause Heart Disease", not disclosing his link to |
| the industry. This demonstrates how the industry was quietly paying for scientists to |
| publicize its position that tobacco is not dangerous. |

| An editorial in Barron's in October 1967 criticized the 1964 Surgeon General's report |
| and attacked government efforts to control tobacco. "What began a few years ago as |
| a seemingly well-intentioned, if disturbing, effort to brainwash the citizenry into kicking |
| the habit thus has spiraled into a crusade as menacing and ugly as Prohibition." The |
| tobacco industry reprinted the editorial in a series of newspaper ads. |

| Stanley Frank, a well-known sports writer, wrote an article "To Smoke or Not to |
| Smoke - That Is Still the Question" in the January 1968 issue of True magazine, |
| concluding that "the hazards of cigarette smoking may not be so real as we have been |
| led to believe." He later wrote another piece for the National Enquirer entitled, |
| "Cigarette Cancer Link is Bunk." Frank did not disclose that he worked for Hill and |
| Knowlton, the public relations firm that created the Tobacco Industry Research |
| Committee and the Tobacco Institute; that he had been paid on behalf of the tobacco |
| industry to write the article; or that tobacco interests had reviewed the article prior to |
| publication. |
