US smokers consumed 524 billion cigarettes in 1990, a 3% decline from 1989, and
an 18% drop from the record high of 1981. But the declining domestic sales are more
than compensated for by the booming export market. In 1990, the US exported 164.3
billion cigarettes worth $4.2 billion, up 41% from the previous year, and the US is now
the world's leading exporter of cigarettes. These exports if place end to end would
circle the equator 347 times, or the equivalent of 18 round trips to the moon.
