A 1995 Herblock cartoon in the Washington Post shows a cigarette company

salesman saying to a young girl "I want to protect you from government bureaucrats" in

front of an ad for Carcino cigarettes which says "Don't Smoke, Kids! Unless you want

to look slim and sophisticated. Together we can work things out."

A poll showed 73% of all Americans favor new restrictions on tobacco sales, 67%

back banning magazine, newspaper and billboard cigarette ads, and 82% of voters

overall and 76% of smokers think that tobacco companies should be banned from

using cartoons or other advertising attractive to children.

In response to the FDA's proposals to regulate tobacco, the five largest tobacco

companies and their lobbying organization, the Tobacco Institute, dumped more than

47,000 pages of comments on the FDA, including a 2,000 page position statement

and 45,000 more pages of supporting material.
