| The state of Minnesota has filed a lawsuit against the tobacco industry to claim |
| reimbursement for tobacco-caused Medicare expenses. The suit also changes fraud |
| and conspiracy, deceptive advertising and trade practices, and a violation of antitrust |
| laws. At the first hearing, the tobacco industry sent 28 attorneys, all white males in |
| white shirts and business suits. The industry has filed innumerable motions and five |
| appeals. It has submitted 9 million pages of documents that fill two document |
| warehouses. |

| Minnesota Attorney General Hubert Humphrey III has been a champion of the |
| importance of disclosure; in preparation for his state's 1998 lawsuit with the industry, |
| he has 500,000 top-secret industry documents totaling 33 million pages. |

| The Minnesota state tobacco lawsuit was settled in May 1998 for $6.6 billion over 25 |
| years, a larger per capita settlement that the previous ones for Texas ($15.3 billion), |
| Florida ($11 billion), and Mississippi ($3.36 billion). |
