A study of top-grossing movies found that movie stars smoke at three times the rate of the audiences watching them. The most frequent users of tobacco were young white men in leading roles who tended to be the heroes. The study author, stanton glantz, said that movies appear to suggest that smoking is normal and even admirable behavior. "films portrayed the smoker in the same way that tobacco advertising does."

Fully 80% of male leads smoked. The study, published by stanton glantz in the winter 1998 issue of tobacco control, found that tobacco was used once every three to five minutes, an increase from once every 10 to 15 minutes in movies from the 1970's and 1980's.
