| In 1983, sylvester stallone guaranteed in writing to smoke brown and williamson |
| cigarettes in five of his upcoming films for a payment of $500,000. B & w terminated |
| the contract before all the films were made because of disappointment with the lack of |
| prominent placement achieved. |

| In a march 1996 study, 77% of 133 current movies portrayed tobacco use. Walt |
| disney pictures was rated the best, with an average of "only" six smoking situations |
| per movie, followed by 20th century fox and universal pictures. At the bottom were |
| Miramax films and castle rock entertainment, with 45 and 34 incidents, respectively. |
| While only 3 percent of the american population smoke cigars, they were depicted in |
| more than half of those movies with tobacco use. |

| The american lung association studied 133 movies released in 1994 and 1995, and |
| found that 77% showed tobacco use. Of 18 films playing in theaters in october 1996, |
| only one was smokeless. 10 of these films featured more than 15 smoking scenes, |
| and all of the top ten films featured tobacco use. |
