"The young couple traveling in a crowded train from the seashore to London started

out necking. But one thing led to another, and soon they were engaged in passionate

lovemaking. Passengers were stunned by the display, but managed to keep stiff

upper lips until the couple got around to the final act of their amorous liaison: lighting

up in a nonsmoking compartment. That was going a bit too far. Outraged riders

stormed the train porters with complaints, and police arrested the man and woman

when they got off. A judge fined them $240 each for the smoking and the indecent

conduct."

Reported in Life Magazine, October, 1992

On a recent trip to Scotland, I stayed with my 73-year-old cousin. One morning she

said "Where's the newspaper? I want to see who quit smoking." Amazed at this, I

asked "Do they publish the names of people who quit smoking in the Scottish

newspapers?" "Aye", she said, "in the obituary column."

Letter published in Dear Abby, February 1993
