Exposure to tobacco smoke increases the risk of chronic infections and fluid in the

middle ear. ETS-exposed children also undergo more tonsillectomies and

adenoidectomies. ETS-exposed children who develop pneumonia have a 20-40%

increased risk that hospitalization will be needed for treatment.
