| The five-year survival rate for oral cancer has improved little in the last four decades, |
| holding steady at about 53%. Only 34% of blacks survived for five years after initial |
| diagnosis, compared with 55% of whites. |

| Estimated new cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx in the United States in |
| 1998 are 30,300, with 8,000 deaths. For cancer of the larynx, estimates are 11,100 |
| cases and 4300 deaths. Five-year cancer survival rates (1986-1993) for cancer of the |
| oral cavity are 55% for whites and 34% for African Americans, and for laryngeal |
| cancer, 69% and 54%, respectively. |

| Non-drinking smokers have two to four times the risk of developing oral cancers as do |
| abstainers of alcohol and tobacco. Heavy drinking smokers have a risk six to fifteen |
| times greater than abstainers. |

| cancer; the prevalence has increased by 70% in the past 35 years. Cigarette smoking |
| and alcohol use increases the risk by 75%, and 82% of cases of cancer of the larynx |
