| There is no known statistical association between smoking and the occurrence of |
| malignant melanoma, but melanoma in a cigarette smoker is twice as likely to have |
| metastasized at diagnosis: 23% vs. 11% in an Australian study. Smoking is also a |
| predictor for poorer prognosis in people with basal cell carcinoma of the skin. |

| In a study from the Netherlands, smokers had a 1.9-fold increased risk for developing |
| squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. There was no increase in the risk for basal cell |
| carcinoma. |
