There is no known statistical association between smoking and the occurrence of

malignant melanoma, but melanoma in a cigarette smoker is twice as likely to have

metastasized at diagnosis: 23% vs. 11% in an Australian study. Smoking is also a

predictor for poorer prognosis in people with basal cell carcinoma of the skin.

In a study from the Netherlands, smokers had a 1.9-fold increased risk for developing

squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. There was no increase in the risk for basal cell

carcinoma.
