Cigarette smoking has been consistently associated with a higher risk of colorectal

adenoma, a precursor of cancer. Recent studies indicate that an increased risk for

colon and large bowel cancer emerges only after a very long induction period, about

four decades after one begins smoking. New estimates are that 21% of colorectal

cancer cases in men are attributable to smoking, or about 16,000 new cases and

6,000 deaths each year in U.S. men. This compares to about 7% of cases attributable

to a family history in a first degree relative. "For women, the proportion of colorectal

cancers attributable to smoking has not been appreciable to date, but may begin

rising as the impact of women's smoking behavior in the 1950s and 1960s becomes

manifest."

For both men and women, smoking a pack a day for 10 to 14 years appears to

double the risk of developing colon cancer decades later.

In a study of U.S. veterans, significant 20% and 40% excess risks of colon and rectal

cancer mortality, respectively, were observed among cigarette smokers. However, a

study of male construction workers in Sweden did not show an association between

cigarette smoking and an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
