"Q. Does cigarette smoking cause cancer? "A. I don't believe so. There's been no

conclusive scientific evidence that convinces me that cigarette smoking causes

cancer. "Q. This warning on the package which says that smoking causes lung

cancer, heart disease and emphysema is inaccurate? You don't believe it's true? "A.

That's correct. "Q. Because if you believed it were true, in good conscience you

wouldn't sell this to Americans, would you, or foreigners, for that matter? "A. That's

Since the 1950's, the tobacco industry has claimed that the evidence linking cancer

with smoking is "merely statistical," and that it is "premature" to accept the "casual

theory" that smoking may cause cancer. The point "is to insinuate doubt, to reassure

smokers, and to stave off regulation through a combination of wishful thinking,

nonsequiturs, and faulty logic."

William Campbell, President and Chief Executive, Philip Morris USA.

countries is a myth. If the tobacco-caused cancer deaths are taken away, then the

remaining cancer death rates are declining.
