| In 1851, Sir James Paget saw a patient with leukoplakia of the tongue from pipe |
| smoking, and "told him he certainly would have cancer of the tongue if he went on |
| smoking." In 1859, Bouisson reported that of 68 cases of patients with mouth cancer |
| at a French hospital, 66 smoked tobacco and one chewed tobacco. He also noted |
| that cancer of the lip usually occurred at the spot where the pipe or cigar was held. |
