The Lancet in 1857 commented about tobacco: "The circulating organs are affected

by irritable heart condition." The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the

Rebellion, published in six volumes from 1875 to 1888, noted that abuse of tobacco

may cause "irritable heart."

In women who smoke and use oral contraceptives, the risk of acute myocardial

infarction is increased by 20.8 times. The risk of myocardial infarction is increased

41-fold in women who smoke and have a history of toxemia of pregnancy (compared

to 4.5-fold in smoking women without a history of toxemia.) There is no evidence that

a smoker who chooses low tar and nicotine brands reduces the risk of myocardial

infarction.
